Presidential Visit

20th January 2015

On the 20th January 2015, H.E. Marie-Louise Coleiro, President of Malta visited San Anton School to meet our Senior Sector students.

The President`s entourage was welcomed by Head of School Dr Joe Gauci and Chairman of the School Board Prof Richard Muscat, together with the School Leadership Team and an Honour Guard of Scouts from the San Anton School Scout Group led by leader Anthony Rizzo.

The delegation was then led to the Amphitheatre where the Senior Sector students formally welcomed the President with a beautiful rendition of the National Anthem performed by students Andre Buhagiar and Emma Degabriele accompanied by Dr Joe Gauci on the keyboard.

Dr Joe then welcomed President Coleiro Preca to the school and commended her Presidency for being one which strives for community and national identity.

The President then addressed the students indeed stressing the importance of national pride and community whilst understanding the importance of diversity and multiculturalism. "For this to take place I am using my energy to see that a culture of social justice is cultivated on the basis of mutual respect, inclusivity, tolerance and diversity - all of which are values that should continue to make us proud that we are Maltese and Gozitans," commented President Coleiro Preca.

Her address also highlighted her profound wish to give young children and youth a voice and the space to share their concerns and aspirations.

She was then introduced to members of the school`s Eko Skola Team who gave her a brief rundown of their environmental endeavours and presented her with two bags of their very own school-produced compost as a memento of her visit to the School.

President Coleiro Preca was then led to the library where she led two informal workshops with selected Senior Sector students who had prepared a serious of social topics for discussion including Immigration, the educational system in Malta, cyber-bullying, internet addiction, legalisation of drugs and the importance of sport amongst others.

Prior to leaving the school, President Coleiro signed the School Visitor`s Book and commented to Dr Gauci on the high level of participation, interest and relevant questions put forward by the students. Furthermore she was highly impressed by various initiatives such as the Anti-Bullying Programme and the Buddy System and invited the school to collaborate with the Presidency on a similar initiative.
