The EkoSkola group at San Anton School came up with the idea of reducing plastic waste by replacing disposable water bottles with refillable ones.
Besides eliminating one plastic bottle per day per child, this initiative also promises a considerable reduction in the school’s carbon footprint since the manufacturing process of plastic bottles requires a lot of energy and water even though they are only used once.
HSBC’s Water Programme, Catch the Drop was what was needed to turn San Anton EkoSkola group’s dream into reality after the project received the required funds to supply the school with refillable bottles.
This project was later used in San Anton School’s application for the Green Flag Award which it subsequently received. The Green Flag is the highest international distinction a school can achieve for its commitment towards Education for Sustainable Development and was presented to the school on the 5th November 2014.
