An Educational Trip to Sicily

July 2011

In July 2011, the Humanities Department once again organised an educational trip to Sicily for the Grade 10 and Grade 11 Students to complement their Environment and Geography syllabus.

Plate Tectonics are discussed in Grade 10 using Etna and the volcanic islands of Sicily as case studies, whilst in Grade 12, Mediterranean architectural heritage is discussed in detail with particular reference to the Greek remains and temples found in Agrigento.

The group visited many areas of interest including Mount Etna, Gole D`Alcantara, Agrigento, and the volcanic islands of Panarea, Stromboli, Lipari and Vulcano. On their boat-trip back from Stromboli, the students were also lucky to witness the ongoing eruption of Sciara del Fuoco, literally meaning “ Stream of Fire.”
