Grade Nine students raise funds in their lunch break for “Puttinu Cares".

Last term, as part of their PSD studies on community care, San Anton School Grade 9 students organised a number of fund raising activities during their lunch break in aid of a charity or support fund.

In the run up to the Christmas Holidays, they gave up their recreational time to run “bake sales” selling home made mince pies, mouth watering cookies and warm drinks. They also took the initiative to organise football and basketball tournaments to help raise further funds.

Through the generosity of all, the students collected the sum of EUR460 which was recently presented by the children to Ms Rita Allen and Ms Maryrose Bugeja from Puttinu Cares – a children`s cancer support group. Whilst thanking the students for their generosity, Ms Allen, Nursing Officer from the Pediatric Oncology Ward at Mater Dei Hospital informed them, that the money donated will be used towards their current campaign towards the purchase of three apartments in Sutton, United Kingdom. These apartments will ease the lives of the families of children undergoing treatment at Royal Marsden Hospital.

“ It is very important for us to see the senior students cultivate the values of cooperation and community, an awareness of other’s needs, and ultimately a sense of altruism and solidarity, particularly because we live in a world which tends to encourage materialism, individualism and competition so forcefully.  We feel that these activities can help them experience these values and realize how fulfilling voluntary work and working with others can be ” commented Natasha Barthet, PSD teacher who guided the students in these fund raising events

“I was excited to see the enthusiasm in the students particularly when they came out with so many ideas and actually took the initiative to organize the tournaments themselves.” concluded Ms Barthet.

San Anton School at L-Imselliet, is an independent, co-educational, mixed ability school, catering for the education of over 900 students aged 3 to 16, from Kindergarten right through to Secondary level.
