Lyr-x Radio Awards 2008

Last Friday 23 rd May months of hard work, auditions and rehearsals were put to the test when San Anton School hosted the 5 th edition of the Lyr-x Radio Awards.

This annual event is certainly the most anticipated event on the school calendar and one where students get a chance to perform, and win awards for their respective radio programs.

Lyr-x Radio, a state-of-the-art radio station and recording studio at San Anton School, gives Senior Sector students the opportunity during their break to present radio programs and DJ. Which are then broadcast to the school. Throughout the Scholastic Year, various local celebrities are also invited to visit the radio station, to meet with students and present signed cds.

This edition of the radio awards was held on the school grounds for the first time, in the form of an open air concert, and was an immediate sell out. Furthermore Silvio Camilleri, San Anton` s Computer Studies teacher and the catalyst behind the Radio and the Radio Awards , certainly outdid himself by once again, organising a highly professional and memorable event. No stone was left unturned to ensure that the participating students and audience, consisting of fellow- students, friends and family, were treated to a night to remember, complete with a professional stage, lighting and special effects.

As the lights dimmed, the audience were treated to a spectular laser show. Images of the nominees were projected onto a big screen, whilst the Grade 11 girls performed an opening dance.

The evening was ably compered by students Kenneth Shaw, Paula Naudi, Timmy Miggiani and Ella Fleri Soler, who presented the various “artistes” and the nominees.

The students and bands wowed the audience with their flawless performances and all present were greatly impressed by the talent and professional confidence demonstrated on stage.

In keeping with tradition, the evening had its fair share of live performances by guest artists, who also presented the awards. This year`s line up included Kristina Casolani and the Waterfall Dancers, Bitterside, and DJ Toby who performed a Live Set together with the Lyrx- x Radio Dancers, and definitely got the audience going.

Most Original Programme Name 2008 was awarded to ` Two P`s in a Pod `hosted by Paula Naudi and Pippa Cachia.

Most Popular Programme 2008 was awarded to `Effem Vibes` hosted by Lucia Calleja and Louisa Sullivan.

Best DJs 2008 was awarded to `H+L FM` hosted by Hannah Flynn and Lisa Mifsud, whilst the Fourth overall award for Best Programme 2008 was awarded to the `Bachelor and his Best man` by John Perici Calascione and Francesco Refalo.

This prestigious award was presented to the winners by popular 89.7 Bay Breakfast Show hosts Jonathan Abel and Elinor who are frequent guests of Lyr-x Radio.

Furthermore. the winners were indeed in for a surprise, as while presenting the award, Abel and Elinor informed them that they would be spending a morning with them on air as co-hosts on their breakfast show on 89.7 Bay. This was definitely well received by the ecstatic winners.

As excitement was running high, the evening came to a close as Mr. Silvio, Mr. Marvic and father and son duo Edward and Luke Mercieca took to the stage to perform Eagle Eye Cherry`s “ Are you still having Fun”

“Each year I am newly impressed by the wealth of incredible talent demonstrated by our students, commented Ms Vicki Anastasi – Head of School. “ The School radio and indeed the radio awards gives our students the opportunity to work as a team and develop their talent, whilst boosting their confidence, self-esteem, communicative ability and creativity. Such an event is typical of the San Anton Ethos intended to foster the best environment for the development of the child as a unique person to eventually become an active and effective member of society in whatever walk of life he or she inserts him/herself,” concluded Ms Vicki.

This event would not have been possible without the support of the students, teachers, parents and the following sponsors: Malta Fairs and Converntion Centre, Atlas Insurance, Highland Spring, Intercomp, Nestlte Fitness, Toyoto Aygo, and Vascas.
