Junior Sector

Junior Sector consists of three grades; ages range from 4 to 11 years. Grade 1 (4 – 5 years) is a transition year. It takes the Pre-Grade programme that much further but it also lays the ground work for the more formal approaches adopted in Grades 2 and 3. The acquisition of literacy in both English and Maltese is a major concern of these years, as is the teaching of numeracy. Different aspects of the curriculum are tackled through a number of themes, which enables teachers to move away from the subject compartments which children will encounter later on in their school life.

Grades 4-7 are very important as they move away from the more relaxed approaches in the Early Sector to the more rigorous demands that Senior Sector will impose on them. The time spent in Middle Sector is one of consolidation, discover and preparation.

It is in this phase that Maltese is accorded a prominent place with the aim that children will become fluent in the language by the time they reach Grade 7. Science and the Humanities are treated in greater depth, and Religion provides an opportunity to introduce pupils to issues of a moral nature.
