Sports Day at San Anton School Junior Sector is a much awaited event on the school calendar. The concepts of fair play, sportsmanship, self-discipline, and respect for rules are very high on the agenda, along with an understanding of the importance of exercise in maintaining a healthy lifestyle.
This year the games were held on Thursday 13th May for Day Care to Grade 3, and on Friday 14th May for Grade 4 to Grade 7. On Thursday, the school’s sport complex was divided into a number of stations and each class, under the guidance of their teachers rotated from one activity to another. Each station was very ably organized by a number of parent helpers whose help was indispensable for the smooth running of the activities. Activities included hoop races, obstacle races, fishing in the wading pool, parachute games and throwing at the target. When all the students had their go at the different stations, it was time for the mummies and daddies to show their mettle at a Tug of War, accompanied by the endless cheering and encouragement of their sons and daughters.
On Friday it was the turn of the Grades 4, 5, 6, and 7 to show off their skills. Students in Grades 4 and 5 participated in team races involving various skills. This contributed a competitive edge to the day and increased considerably the student’s excitement. Meanwhile the Grade 6’s and Grade 7’s participated in various Athletics events and mini tournaments in football and handball. At the end of the day, when all the results had been added it transpired that the Yellow House had won the Shield for the second time in 3 years, winning it back from the Red House who had conquered last year’s Sports Day.
A very big well done goes to all the students who gave their all to put in a good performance, and a big thank you must go to all the parent helpers who, in one way or another made this year’s Sports Day a successful event and a happy experience for the children.
