On the 23rd April 2013, H.E. Dr. George Abela, President of Malta visited San Anton School.
The President`s entourage was welcomed by Head of School Dr. Joe Gauci and Chairman of the School Board Mr. Simon Flynn, together with the School Leadership Team, and an Honour Guard of Scouts from the San Anton School Scout Group led by Group Scout Leader Gordon Dimech and leaders Hilary Agius and Anthony Rizzo.
The delegation was then led to the Early Years and Junior Sectors where they visited various classes and had ample opportunity to interact with the children, to admire their colourful work and the cheerful ambience created by the teachers.
The delegation was then escorted to the Senior Sector to visit the school radio station Lyr-x and the “ Let me Learn” Humanities exhibition which allowed him to interact with the students along the way.
His next stop was the Backyard Habitat, a unique environmental and nature conservation initiative within the school grounds. The Backyard team of students led by Property Manager Joe Attard gave the entourage a lively rundown of the environmental work they have been involved in and presented the President with two bags of their very own school-produced compost.
After meeting various members of Staff, the President was led towards the foyer where the Grade 7, 8 and 10 students were seated with their teachers awaiting the President`s Address. Dr. Joe formally thanked President Abela for visiting San Anton School, following which, Grade 11 student Andrea Coleiro addressed the President on behalf of the student body.
This led to an organised question and answer session where students were able to ask the President questions. The questions ranged from asking him about his favourite subject at school to his recent missionary work in Peru.
He was then presented with a painting by a former San Anton Student, and a donation for the Community Chest Fund by the San Anton School Scout Group.
To conclude the programme on an official note, the San Anton School Junior Sector Choir led by Choir Director Michelle Abela, performed a beautiful rendition of our National Anthem afterwhich the President had the opportunity to meet the Senior Leadership Team.
