On Wednesday 21st March 2012, Finance Minister Tonio Fenech, accompanied by Education and Employment Minister, Dolores Cristina, visited San Anton School.
The entourage was welcomed by Head of School, Joe Gauci and Chairman of the School Board Simon Flynn, together with the School Leadership Team and members of the San Anton Scout Group.
The delegation was led to the Junior Sector where they visited various classes and had ample opportunity to interact with the children, to admire their colourful work, crafts and the cheerful ambience created by the Junior Sector students and teachers. They also tasted Easter biscuits being prepared by the children and participated in various lessons and activities.
After admiring the San Anton Sports Complex, the delegation were then escorted to the Senior Sector to visit the School Radio Station LYR-X, the Home Economics Area where they sampled some seasonal treats and the Art Room before proceeding to the Science Labs to witness various experiments being performed by the students.
Their next stop was the Backyard Habitat, a unique environmental and nature conservation initiative within the school grounds. The Backyard team led by Property Manager Joe Attard gave the entourage a lively rundown of the environmental work they have been involved in and presented Minister Fenech and Minister Cristina with a bag of their very own school-produced compost. The entourage also interacted with pre-grade students who were participating in an outdoor nature lesson with their teachers.
After a short welcoming speech by the Head of School, both ministers then addressed the various members of the media present and spoke about the tax incentives given to parents of children attending Independent Schools and the growing collaboration between the Independent Schools and the Government.
Whilst touring the school, both ministers praised San Anton’s innovative practices which encourage the holistic formation of students. They also commented favourably on the success of the inclusive educational practices of the school which can be seen in the excellent results obtained annually in the MATSEC exams as well as the Grade 7 End of Primary Benchmark Exams.
