Meet Ms. Donna Desira - Grade 1 teacher in Early Years.

How long have you been teaching at San Anton School?

I've been teaching at San Anton School for the last 6 years.

What do you love about teaching in the Early Years sector ?

I love being around young children, so working with them isn't a job for me. It's a passion, and something that feels effortless as a result.

What is the most challenging part of the job?

The most challenging part of my job is that my day doesn't end when I leave school as most would think. I get home and constantly try to think of new, exciting and educational activities for my children. I really do take a personal interest, however it means that I never stop thinking about work.

What changes can you see in the educational methodology at San Anton School compared to when you were at school?

The methodology has definitely changed. In my time, we were only taught out of books which were not as stimulating or interesting as books are nowadays. However, the educational system specifically the thematic approach which we use, allows us to focus on the children's' interest at heart from which we can then build educational themes as we plan our weekly/monthly/yearly goals. This gives us the opportunity to adapt according to the children's needs and levels, making it more holistic and beneficial for the children.

What is your favourite childhood memory?

Born and raised in the UK, Sunday was my favourite day as I would head to Box Hill, where after getting to the top of this very steep hill, we would race down the muddy hill and end up near a beautiful pebbled lake. We would spend our time albeit all muddy, playing amongst ourselves and finish off going home to very angry mums.

Any hobbies?

Cooking is definitely something I enjoy. Having recently become a nanna, spending time with my granddaughter certainly is my favourite past time of them all though.

Which is your favourite book?

Unfortunately I don't have much time to read books, however my favourite story books (for children) are without a doubt, Beatrix Potter "The Tale of Jemima Puddle - Duck & "We're Going on a Bear Hunt" by Michael Rosen.

Favourite Food?

I simply love all food. Being a vegetarian, fish is something I could eat daily, however one cannot forget my apple crumble and warm custard, which is hands down my ultimate favourite!
